A few months ago, I saw a question in the community on how to image a Microsoft Surface Pro tablet. As I knew we were looking at getting some ourselves, I've tried to find the best ways to image one. Now there are some how-to's on the web, but none in the SW community that I found. If anyone knows of a better way to do this, please let me know.

Surface

Step 1: Preparation

Here's what I used:
An external USB CDDVD drive
A powered USB hub
A USB to Ethernet adapter (my copy of clonezilla didn't have drivers for the wireless)
A USB keyboard (Our Surface Pro's came before the keyboards did)
Clonezilla on CD

Step 2: Getting the Surface Pro ready to be imaged

It must have been dumb luck that the Surface I picked to make my image had a bad Win 8 install. File explorer, internet explorer, and a few other items wouldn't work so I pulled out my Win8 ISO and created a new install. If you want to wipe and install Win8, get the Surface Pro Drivers from the following link as they are not a part of the Win8 ISO.

To edit the UEFI boot settings so I could boot to CD, I pressed and held the volume up button and then pressed the power button. This boots to the UEFI settings. I disabled both settings and then exited saving the changes. The Surface then reboots. I had to let the Surface boot fully and then I was able to shut down. I tried interrupting the initial load sequence by powering off and then powering back on, but it came up wherever I left off.

At this point, connect your Surface to external power and connect your USB hub to the USB 3.0 port on the Surface. Press and hold the volume down button and then press the power button. An internet article says you can let go of the volume down button when SURFACE comes up, but I waited until my CD drive started reading the disc. Clonezilla should come up in a few seconds and you are ready to go.

I hope this helps anyone who is rolling out Surface Pro's. I'd assume this would work on a Pro 2, but I don't really know. If anyone knows of a better way to get the Surface Pro to boot to CD right out of the box or can see a better way to do any of these steps, I would love to know.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've edited the step and added links to MS support pages. I also found MS instructions for booting to UEFI settings. I've got a few more to image and will try this.

With the latest MS instruction on the UEFI settings I found, I was able to streamline the process quite a bit.

Yes the USB 3 hub is invaluable when trying to image these things since you only have one USB port for the boot device on the Surface itself.

I use a USB hub with my boot device (USB stick) and USB large storage as well as a hardwired network connection. Makes life mush easier.

    Thanks for the post.

    D_Green,
The only time I used another computer besides a Surface Pro was when I discovered that Win8 doesn't have the hardware drivers for the Surface.

Good Write up. I would use a bootable USB stick instead of a CD. You can use Rufus to create the bootable stick as well.

    Thanks Sean.

I've had the distinct pleasure of imaging 42 Surface Pro 3 devices with Acronis 2014...not much different except I used the MS dock
